Skills to read... Power to lead The Problem: the schools that partner with Great Shape! Inc. report a 40% literacy rate. The Solution: Great Shape's SuperKids The Need: certified teachers, computer tech's, coaches, artists, musicians, people who just like to work with kids (we'll train you). 2010 Project Dates: * Week 1: Arrive Nov. 5 or 6 and depart Nov. 13 * Week 2: Arrive Nov. 13 and depart Nov. 21 or 22 Volunteers improve literacy through a curriculum and resources in reading, computers, art, music and sports. Non-teaching folks partner with certified teachers in rural schools outside Ocho Rios, while several other schools receive books and computer labs. There is a $650 project fee. Seeing is Believing The Problem: in Western Jamaica, there are NO public health eye care providers The Solution: Great Shape's iCare program The Need: eye doctors and people who love the idea of service (we'll train you for your volunteer spot) 2010 Project Dates Whitehouse, Westmoreland * Week 1: Arrive Sept. 17 or 18 and depart Sept. 26 or 27 Montego Bay, St. James * Week 2: Arrive Sept. 24 or 25 and depart Oct. 3 or 4 Whitehouse AND Montego Bay * Week 1&2: Arrive Sept. 17 or 18 and depart Oct. 3 or 4 (you'll transfer from Whitehouse to MoBay) Great Shape! Inc., partners with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity - Northwest to facilitate a vision project in Western Jamaica where the cost of a pair of glasses is over a month's pay for the average Jamaican. iCare volunteers provide eye exams, surgery referrals, and thousands of eyeglasses and sunglasses. the world's largest, international, humanitarian dental project! 2010 dates are listed under menu choice: "1000 Smiles Volunteer Info". Click here to apply now for the 1000 Smiles Project. The Problem: in rural Jamaica, there is just one dentist for every 100,000 people! The Need: dental pro's, dental equipment tech's, and people who have a heart to serve (we'll train you and put you to work). The Solution: Great Shape! Inc.'s 1000 Smiles. Every fall teams serve in rural areas of Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril. Volunteers provide free dental care and dental hygeine education, including cleanings, extractions, sealants, tooth brushes and paste.
